In recent years, according to the policy of development of national science and technology, Tajen University for its three development axis of health promotion, environmental conservation and care services actively cultivated advanced technology and innovative research talents with specialty of health, management, leisure and social welfare under the vision of enhancing people’s life quality. That makes Tajen University toward a practical university. Based on 103-105 school year’s development intermediate target, international and informational teaching environment would be constructed, and not only flipped teaching education could develop for improving the quality of teaching, but also the integration of industry, government and academia, could promote the development of community.

Our school was formerly known as Tajen Pharmacy College founded in March 1966. Three-stage development respectively named as Tajen Pharmacy College, Tajen Technology College and Tajen University was included during fifty years. Our department’s development was also changed with the history of our school owing to the transformation of industry demand and social values. Now our department, Department of Environmental Science and Occupational Safety and Health (Graduate School of Environmental Management), includes two curriculum modules in bachelor degree and their histories are individually described as the following.

Environmental Science and Technology

(a) The period of Tajen Pharmacy College

This module was early constructed as Division of Public Hazard Prevention and Control belonging to five-year academy system in 1983 and the two- year academy system with day/night divisions was established in 1989. Afterwards, the name for Division of Public Hazard Prevention and Control was renamed as Division of Environmental Engineering and Health in 1996.

(b) The period of Tajen Technology College

After passing the University Self-evaluation, our school was promoted into high-level education called as Tajen Technology College in 1999 ; meanwhile Division of Environmental Engineering and Health was upgraded to Department of Environmental Engineering and Health which recruited two-year college and four-year college students. Later in 2002, our department was renamed as Department of Environmental Engineering and Science. Simultaneously, Graduate School of Environmental Management which was the first graduate school in our school was jointly established by our department and Department of Occupational Safety and Health. In order to simplify the educational system, the five-year day division and two-year night departments were abolished in 2004 and the two-year day division was abolished in 2005.

After passing the evaluation by Ministry of Education, our school was renamed as Tajen University in 2005. To be suitable for the development of our department, our department’s name was changed as Department of Environmental Resource Management in 2006. Based on the demand of the green technology talents, Department of Environmental Resource Management covered the environmental technology and management group, and the energy technology group. As environmental and industrial safety incidents had occurred frequently in recent years, the demands for these kinds of talents became urgent, resulting the incorporation with Department of Environmental Resource Management and Department of Occupational Safety and Health were incorporated in August 1, 2011, which is our current department.

The curriculum module of Occupational Safety and Health

(a) The period of Tajen Pharmacy College

This module’s predecessor was Division of Industrial Safety and Health which was constructed in1988 in order to cultivate basic industrial safety and health talents providing industry with an ability to reduce occupational hazards. At that time it was the second educational institution in Taiwan to cultivate industrial safety and health talents. For quickly developing occupational safety personnel into the workplace, the two-year day division was established in 1990, which recruited senior vocational school graduates with vocational skills. Later, the two-year night division was found in 1994 for recruiting senior vocational school graduates to willingly learn occupational safety skills.

(b) The period of Tajen Technology College

As our school was upgraded to technology institution, Division of Industrial Safety and Health was renamed as Department of Industrial Safety and Health; meanwhile the two-year day/night departments was established to suit the demand of advanced talents in the workplace. Later the four-year day/night departments were set in 2001 and this department was renamed as Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

With the completion of the historical stage and the trend of development, the two-year night division, the two-year and four-year day division, finally, the two-year night/day department was respectively abolished in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. To cultivate four-year bachelor degree and master degree was our major object. During 28 years, over 3,000 occupational safety and health talents has cultivated by this module.

Graduate School of Environmental Management

Owing to the industrial upgrading, the demand for environmental management advanced talents with master degree was urgently demanded by the market. Therefore, Graduate School of Environmental Management was jointly established in 2002 by Department of Environmental Engineering and Science and Department of Occupational Safety and Health, which recruited students divided into day and night divisions.

In consideration of market demands of employment and license, our current department divided into two types of industry course of environmental technology, and occupational safety and health. No matter day/night college students, the completion of language ability and information ability was considered as the basic threshold before graduation; however, student studying in four-year day division must obtain one of special core licenses for increasing the competition ability of graduates. Related course majored, license obtained, and position career were inspected in our department web.
